Henry dashed into the street and gasped.

The evacuation had begun. Families, carrying what they could, crowded the village streets, driven by a new sense of urgency. Those unable to walk were carried in carts while livestock clamored alongside.

Henry quickened his pace. I have to find father, he thought again and again.

When Henry arrived, St. Mary’s Square was swarming with soldiers. Militia marched in lines while scouts raced by on horseback.

Clutching his lanterns, he searched for his father, but in the sea of uniforms everyone looked the same.

Above the bustling square, a strong wind brought heavy clouds and Henry felt the start of rain.

A unit of men hurried past, talking nervously of cannons and ships and British soldiers clad in red. Not a one seemed to know the hour the British would come. Only that they were coming.
